How to choose a luau

  • Buffet or plated? Most luaus serve a buffet. Premium seating often adds table service, closer seats and an earlier lei greeting.
  • Show style. Some luaus focus on Hawaiian hula and history. Others tour the Pacific, with Tahitian dance, Samoan fire knife dancing and Maori haka.
  • Imu ceremony. Many luaus unearth the kalua pig from an underground oven before dinner. Arrive early to see it.
  • Drinks. Check whether drinks are included or a set number of drink tickets are given.
  • Book ahead. Popular luaus sell out on weekends and in winter, and prices vary a lot by seating level.
